Emily has been with Well Grounded since June 2012; she joined the team as it was setting up the office in Yaoundé and now works from Ottawa, Canada. She was appointed Executive Director in 2017. Emily grew up in Canada and is fluent in English and French.

She is an experienced facilitator with expertise in gender analysis, participatory approaches, programme and project management, and fundraising. She also has experience in designing and carrying out research, and an expertise in various forms of communication and documentation.

Before joining Well Grounded, Emily worked with Oxfam Canada for four years as a Program Development Officer, with a particular focus on promoting women’s rights and gender equality in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Specific responsibilities included project and programme management, supporting capacity-building initiatives with local civil society organisations, communications, strategic planning and fundraising. Prior to that Emily worked with the National Aboriginal Health Organisation as a Research Officer; with the Canadian Network on Corporate Accountability as the Interim Coordinator; and with the North-South Institute as a part-time Research Associate as part of their programme on Indigenous Perspectives on Consultation and Decision-Making about Mining and Other Natural Resources in Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada.

Emily has a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Development and Human Rights and wrote her thesis paper on intellectual and cultural property rights for Indigenous Peoples. She also has a Master of Arts degree in Human Geography. Her Master’s research involved working closely with an indigenous community in Guyana, South America to train local women in participatory mapping processes, and to contribute to a wider land claims initiative.

Emily is passionate about and inspired by the work she has been doing for Well Grounded with national organisations in the Congo Basin since 2012.
